MANILA – Rene Herrera continued to make his presence felt for the Philippine Team after bagging three medals in the 20th Asian Master Athletics Championships in Rugao, China on Wednesday.
The native of Guimaras province first captured a silver medal in the men’s 35-and-above 3,000m steeplechase before settling for bronze medals in the 1,500m and 5,000m events.
A five-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist, Herrera is also serving as the National Athletics Team’s head coach in the tournament that was participated by 20 countries.
Veteran thrower Erlinda Lavandia, meanwhile, is currently the most productive member of the Philippine delegation after taking home four medals, including two golds and two silvers.
Lavandia captured her gold medals in the women’s 65-year-and-above shot put and javelin throw events. She posted second-placed finishes in discus and hammer throws.
Julio Bayaban also won a gold medal in men’s 55-and-above 100m dash and a bronze in 200m event, while Emerson Obiena also had his share of gold in 50-and-above pole vault.
Ariel Lobos captured a silver in 60-and-above men’s long jump and a bronze in 100m hurdles, while Salve Bayaban contributed a bronze in 50-and-abover women’s 200m race.
Also part of the 12-man Philippine delegation were Dennis Scott in men’s 65-and-above, Drolly Claravall 60-and-above, Edward Obiena and Ma. Carmencita Muana women’s 50-and above./PN
