MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings effectively blocked San Miguel Beermen’s Grand Slam bid with a 104-84 triumph in their PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinals match at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Import Justin Brownlee led the way with double-double 37 points and 12 rebounds while Joe Devance added 17 markers, including four 3-point baskets, for Kings.
Kings – the defending champion – will face the winner in the knockout match between TNT KaTropa and Rain or Shine Elasto Painters tonight in the best-of-five semifinals starting Oct. 2.
Both teams were on a deadlock 23-all at the end of the first quarter Wednesday night. Kings pulled away in the second frame on outside hits by Brownlee for the team to surge 48-32 following a LA Tenorio triple.
But Beermen made its move early in the third as it trimmed the deficit 46-55 on an Arwind Santos hit, but Kings leaned on back-to-back treys by Solomon Mercado to increase the lead further 74-61.
Kings continued to move away from Beermen in the fourth, with Devance, Brownlee and Mercado converting their outside shots to build their largest lead 99-70 on a throwdown by Greg Slaughter.
“Who would have thought that this was coming?” said Kings head coach Tim Cone. “We just played great basketball from start to finish. We did a good job against San Miguel, but the job is not finished yet.”
Terrence Watson top-scored with 30 points while June Mar Fajardo added double-double 19 points and 22 rebounds for Beermen./PN
