KALIBO, Aklan – Tribes and groups joining the street-dancing competition in the 2018 Ati-Atihan Festival will get higher subsidies, organizers said.
Additional funding will be taken from savings in this year’s edition of the festival, according to Albert Menez, chairman of the Kalibo Sto. Niño Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. (Kasafi).
Subsidies worth P882,500 for the costumes were released to 30 participants in this year’s Sadsad Ati-Atihan.
Tribal Big category contestants got P47,000 each; Tribal Small, P30,000 each; Balik-Ati, P23,500 each; and Modern Group, P18,000 each.
But on Feb. 9, Kasafi approved the proposal of the participation committee to increase the subsidies to P1,055,500, or by 20 percent.
Merrymakers could also expect “something big, something new” in next year’s edition of the festival, Menez said. New tourism activities will be introduced, the Kasafi chairman said without disclosing any detail.
Next year’s “mother of All Philippine festivals,” in honor of Señor Santo Niño de Kalibo, will be held from Jan. 12 to 21.
Under a memorandum of agreement with the local government, Kasafi had been organizing the festival since 2010.
The agreement with the volunteers’ organization, registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission, was renewed in 2013, and again in 2016. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
