MANILA – The 2019 Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee was urged to hold events at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.
The Philippines is hosting the biennial regional competition across three provinces in Central Luzon, the Department of Foreign Affairs had said.
Pampanga, Bulacan and Zambales were being considered as event sites.
“Please seriously consider Bulacan,” said Sen. Joel Villanueva, who comes from the province. “We have the [Philippine] Arena and other great facilities, plus extraordinary hospitality of Bulakenyos.”
A 140-hectare multipurpose indoor arena at Ciudad de Victoria, the Philippine Arena has a 51,898-seat capacity.
Foreign Affairs secretary Alan Peter Cayetano is the 2019 SEA Games Organizing Committee chairman.
While he considers having a sports hub built in Clark, Pampanga, Cayetano worries that some facilities might not be completed within two years.
“If sports facilities and infrastructure have yet to be seen in Clark, I think it would be much better if we utilize those facilities in the Philippine Arena that are only waiting to be showcased,” Villanueva said.
Hosting the SEA Games will give the Philippines a chance to prioritize the sports sector, especially the training of athletes, added the senator./PN
