MANILA – It may have failed to defend its gold medal in the 29th Southeast Asian Games but the Volcanoes was quick to move on.
The Philippine team scored back-to-back wins against Malaysia and Taiwan in the Asia Rugby Sevens Series on Tuesday in Hong Kong.
Volcanoes exacted revenge on SEA Games gold medalist Malaysia as it rattled off 33 unanswered points from Tommy Kalaw Gilbert, Joe Palabay Dawson and Vincent Amar Young for an easy victory.
There has “always been a great rivalry” between these two nations, said Volcanoes veteran Jake Letts. “Malaysia is a class outfit. It goes to show the level and intensity of the sport in the region.”
Prior to the victory over Malaysia, Volcanoes defeated the Taiwan squad.
The Asian Rugby Sevens Series is the annual ranking tournament for the top eight Rugby Sevens nations in Asia. The top three winning countries will head to the World Rugby Hong Kong Sevens.
The top two teams from the World Rugby Hong Kong Sevens will qualify for the 2018 Rugby World Cup in the United States.
The Volcanoes managed to reach the World Cup in 2013 and looks to repeat the feat this year./PN
