MANILA – The House of Representatives approved a bill allowing companies and employees to do regular work for a minimum of four days a week.
Representatives voted unanimously to pass House Bill No. 6152 on third and final reading.
Under the measure, employees may work more than eight hours a day but for only four or five days a week. The bill also makes employees entitled to overtime pay if their work exceeds 48 hours a week.
House Bill No. 6152 institutionalizes a compressed work week policy “to promote business competitiveness, work efficiency and labor productivity,” the House said in a press statement.
“The compressed workweek will be an option aside from the current five- or six-day workweek,” the representatives said. “In addition, employees are entitled to up to three days off weekly.”
The measure will be transmitted to the Senate for a counterpart bill. If the bill becomes a law, the Department of Labor and Employment shall draft and issue its implementing rules and regulations.
An employee who chooses to work for four days a week could opt to work 12 hours a day, said Rep. Mark Go (Baguio City), author of the bill.
“This bill [is aimed] at improving [the] employers and employees’ flexibility in fixing hours of work compatible with business requirements and the employees’ need for work-life balance,” said Go./PN
