BACOLOD City – President Rodrigo Duterte was about an hour late to his expected 5:30 p.m. arrival at the public plaza yesterday.
The President delivered a speech before local government officials and employees, members of the press and residents at around 7 p.m.
He gave his speech after witnessing the performance of Barangay 18, the sixth competing group out of 14 barangay contingents to perform during yesterday’s arena dance competition.
In his speech, Duterte commended the celebration of the MassKara Festival, which was inspired by the resilience of Bacolodnons during challenging times, like the sugar industry crisis and the sinking of M/S Don Juan of the Negros Navigation in 1980.
“Let us be prepared for any eventuality,” Duterte said, warning Filipinos of possible terror attacks.
He also mentioned about the drop in his trust ratings shown in the results of a Social Weather Stations survey covering the period Sept. 23 to 27, with 1,500 adult respondents nationwide and a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3 percentage points.
Duterte said he does not “give a shit” about the drop in his ratings.
According to the President, he was already “rated” by more than 16 million Filipinos in last year’s presidential elections.
Rep. Greg Gasataya, Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. and Masskara Queen Fercy Lyn Almaiz welcomed the President to the festival site.
Duterte was accompanied by Presidential Assistant for Visayas Michael Dino, who introduced him before he gave his speech.
Marañon said he will talk with Duterte to propose a project, which he will disclose in a press conference this week./PN
