BACOLOD City – Police officers and anti-Duterte protesters clashed for more than an hour yesterday on Gatuslao Street. No injuries were recorded.
The protesters were members of groups under the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan in Negros Island (Bayan-Negros).
Bayan-Negros secretary-general Michael Concepcion on Oct. 20 said they will welcome President Rodrigo Duterte with a protest against his administration’s “anti-poor policies.”
Duterte was in the city yesterday attending the 38th MassKara Festival highlights at the public plaza.
The protesters – led by Kilusang Mayo Uno secretary-general Noli Rosales – forced their way to the other side of a “police barricade” that the Philippine National Police Civil Disturbance Management personnel made. The scuffle lasted for a few minutes.
Rosales and other militant group leaders initially negotiated with the security personnel led by Senior Inspector Gilbert Gorero, who is the spokesperson of the Police Regional Office 6.
Rosales asked Gorero to allow them to stage a short indignation rally on Gatuslao-Burgos streets and promised that they will disperse after.
Gorero told the protesters to wait for he shall ask “clearance” from his superior officers.
Gorero allowed the protesters to rally on an area near the Department of Labor and Employment.
Rosales said they want to end state-sponsored killings, especially that of farmers living in the country side.
The protesters also demanded to lift martial law in Marawi City and the resumption of the government’s peace talks with the National Democratic Front./PN
