ROXAS CITY, Capiz – The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) in this province condemned the attempt on the life of its member Atty. Cris Heredia, 49, and her daughter.
Heredia was on board a white Toyota Fortuner driven by her daughter when they were “ambushed” in Barangay Malapad Cogon in Sigma, Capiz around 11:30 a.m. on Monday.
The IBP-Capiz said the attempt on their lives “is another detestable act which has no place in a democratic society which the IBP abhors.”
“The legal profession calls upon its members to continue to be vigilant and to pray for the safety of all its members,” it added.
“We also call upon the authorities to investigate the incident as this is not just an attack to a lawyer but an attack to the right to life of each and every individual,” it said.
Initial investigation of the Sigma police station showed assailants targeted Heredia’s client Jimmy Dordas as based on the trajectory of bullets that riddled the lawyer’s car.
“Sa amon nga pag imbistigar sa paglantaw namon based on the volume of fire nagwa nga si Jimmy Dordas ang target kay sa likod siya naga pungko,” Sigma chief Captain Christian Mahometano said.
Dordas, a government employee, was slightly hit on the neck.
Heredia and Dordas were ambushed few minutes after attending a court hearing in Dao town on a land dispute case.
“Pagkabaton naton sang balita sa natabo kay Atty. Cris Heredia, nagtuga ini sang kakugmang sa aton,” IBP-Capiz president Atty. Remia Bartolome told Panay News.
“We see the incident as a threat to the legal profession,” Bartolome added.
Police investigators claimed the incident was more likely a “shooting incident” and not ambush.
“My death threat ining si Dordas kag na notice niya nga may nagasunod sa ila from Dao on their way to Panitan town while traversing Barangay Timpas road. Paglupok naka gwa siya sa salakyan kag naka balos palupok using his service pistol,” Mahometano said.
Several empty shells of a .9mm-caliber firearm were recovered from the crime scene and a makeshift silencer found few meters away.
Police said Heredia and her daughter, who recently passed the medical board examination, were unharmed./PN
