ILOILO City – The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Western Visayas condemned the murder of a lawyer handling controversial and drug-related cases in Palawan province.
A lone gunman shot to death Atty. Hermie Aban, 41, in Barangay Bancao-Bancao, Puerto Princesa, Palawan on Tuesday.
“In a spate of murders of lawyers and judges, we are outraged at the impunity of the offenders,” according to Atty. Marienne Ibadlit, IBP governor for Western Visayas.
Aban was shot by a motorcycle-driving assassin as he was leaving his house around 8:30 a.m.
“In an environment of senseless violence, the IBP stands firm in its commitment to the Rule of Law. Members of the IBP will continue to help the courts, clients and the public in accordance with our sacred oath,” stressed Ibadlit.
Aban died while being treated at the Cooperative Hospital in Puerto Princesa.
“We call on the authorities concerned to do their sworn duty and take all the necessary steps to apprehend the offenders so that cases may be filed and justice will prevail,” according to Ibadlit.
As of this writing, the police were yet to identify a suspect.
