ILOILO City – The city government has inaugurated a treatment facility for hospital wastes at the city’s engineered sanitary landfill in Barangay Calajunan, Mandurriao district.

All hospital wastes in the metropolis will now be treated there, said Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.

The city government tapped the Pollution Abatement Systems Specialists, Inc. (PASS) for the project construction through a joint venture.

“We all know that wastes have bacteria and viruses. If these are not killed, they will cause harm and spread diseases,” said Mabilog.

The operation of the treatment facility for hospital wastes is deemed a milestone for Iloilo City. Republic Act 6969 or the Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Waste Control Act is the legal basis why medical wastes should be disposed.

“If these wastes are left untreated, the risk will be very high especially to those who are handling the wastes,” said PASS chief executive officer Engr. Jolito Pogoy.

Now, all hospital wastes will be gathered through a refrigerated van and will be brought to the treatment facility.

“The refrigerated van will bring down the temperature and reduce the bacteria and viruses of the wastes collected. Then we will bring the hospital wastes to the facility and place these in the autoclave for treatment,” said Pgoy.

After this, the wastes will be brought to the interim for the disposal.

Mabilog said the city government also plans to put up a wastewater treatment facility within this year to treat all wastes from septic tanks. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
