ILOILO City – The Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) would be checking the security systems of business establishments.
Senior Superintendent Henry Biñas, city police director, said he would summon business operators for a meeting, especially those of pawnshops, jewelry stores, money lending institutions, and banks.
On Saturday, a jewelry store inside Gaisano Guanco department store was robbed. Some P10 million worth of jewelry items were stolen, plus P70,000 cash.
“We have previously stressed to them the importance of having security cameras as a crime deterrent. These could also help solve crimes,” said Biñas.
He lamented that some businesses still do not have security cameras.
Biñas said he would also push for business establishments to have nightshift security guards.
On Monday, the ICPO named three suspects in the robbery of Aljun Jewelry Store at Gaisano Guanco – Kenneth Doyodoy, Madred Batnag and Angelo Cariaga alias Marvin Kasoy Tawanga, all of Mountain Province.
The suspects’ records at the Iloilo Corporate Inn where they had stayed helped in their identification.
Iloilo Corporate Inn is adjacent to Gaisano Guanco. The suspects used the fire exit of the inn to get to Gaisano Guanco, initial investigation showed. They ripped open Gaisano Guanco’s galvanized iron roof.
Biñas said video recordings of the inn’s security cameras also helped the police identify the suspects.
“This group is operating nationwide. They target mostly pawnshops and jewelry stores. We are coordinating with the police of other regions to get more information about the suspects,” said Biñas.
He did not discount the possibility that the suspects had local contacts.
The burglary was discovered by Gaisano Guanco security guard Christopher Gumayao who opened the department store around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday./PN
