ILOILO City – The Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) is deploying more policemen to Smallville and Atria entertainment and leisure complexes in Barangay San Rafael, Mandurriao district.
Their task is to keep the area peaceful, according to Senior Inspector Shella Mae Sangrines, ICPO spokesperson. She cited the spate of violent incidents in the areas that usually involved gangs of youngsters, most especially at night.
The Mandurriao police station has jurisdiction over Smallville and Atria. Its police force would be augmented by cops from the Regional Public Safety Battalion of the Police Regional Office 6 and Iloilo City Public Safety Company, said Sangrines.
“The main concern are gang members who are minors. We have to coordinate with the Department of Social Welfare and Development in our operations,” said ICPO acting director Senior Superintendent Henry Biñas.
A strict enforcement of the curfew ordinance on minors would be effected, he added.
ICPO’s Special Weapons and Tactics will also be posted at Smallville and Atria nightly from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
“By then, some groups would already be drunk. Our men would prevent them from creating trouble,” said Sangrines.
Traffic police, on the other hand, would be posted at the entrances and exits of Smallville and Atria, she said.
Sangrines, however, declined to say how many police officers would be posted in the two areas.
“We all know that so many incidents are happening at Smallvile and youngsters, even the minors, are involved,” she said.
Biñas also stressed the importance of security cameras at Smallville and Atria. He, however, observed that some were not functioning.
“We need high-quality cameras to help curb and solve crimes. I’m planning to meet business establishment owners about this,” he said.
