ILOILO – This province now has an official tagline – “It has to be Iloilo” – by virtue of an ordinance.
The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) approved the ordinance adopting such tagline during its session on Tuesday.
“It has to be Iloilo” will be used to market the province to spur investments and attract local and international tourists, according to SP members Marcelo Valentine Serag of the 1st District and Demetrio Sonza of the 2nd District, authors of the ordinance.
The tagline may also be used in investment and tourism flyers promoting the province.
“The tagline will help make Iloilo province more known and easy to recall,” said Serag.
Iloilo City already has a tagline – “I am Iloilo, Proud to be Ilonggo.”
According to Serag, the province’s most recent taglines, although not official, stirred confusion if not typographical or grammatical embarrassment. These were the “Its Got To Be Iloilo” and “It’s Got To Be Iloilo”.
“Iloilo has a lot of tourist spots. There are beaches in the north and south of the province. There are many historical sites, too,” said Serag. “When you’re into these things, it has to be Iloilo.”
In pushing for the ordinance, Serag and Sonza cited Section 10, Article XVI of the 1987 Constitution which states that, “the State shall provide the policy environment for the full development of Filipino capability and the emergence of communication structures suitable to the needs and aspirations of the nation and the balanced flow of information into, out of, and across the country, in accordance with a policy that respects the freedom of speech and of the press.”/PN
