BORACAY – This island resort and Iloilo City are prepping up for the 29th Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Programme (SSEAYP) International General Assembly (SIGA) 2017 from April 26 to 30.
More than 200 youth ambassadors from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and host country Philippines will take part in the event.
On April 26, a Council of Presidents meeting will be held at Smallville 21 Hotel in Iloilo City. A welcome dinner, the opening ceremonies and a trade fair will be at the Iloilo Convention Center (ICC).
At the opening ceremonies, Iloilo City mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog will meet the delegates and present them a symbolic key.
On April 27, the delegates will gather at the ICC for a general assembly before getting into community activities focusing on livelihood, environmental conservation, and maternal and child health.
In the evening, they will attend a cultural program at the Iloilo provincial capitol grounds where Gov. Arthur Defensor will serve as guest of honor.
On April 28, the delegates will head to Boracay for closing ceremonies and beach activities until April 30.
SECURITY
The international event has put the police and the military on guard.
Police will establish route security from the Aklan-Capiz boundary (Altavas town) to Barangay Caticlan, Malay town.
Police assistance desks will be put up, while teams for emergency and medical response, route and traffic management will be on standby.
These were discussed during a “coordination meeting” on security preparations for the SIGA 2017 at Camp Pastor Martelino in Kalibo, Aklan on Monday.
Police chiefs, Philippine Army’s 12th Infantry Battalion soldiers, and representatives from other law enforcement units and disaster management offices attended the meeting presided by Senior Superintendent Lope Manlapaz, acting Aklan police director.
The SIGA 2017 theme, “One Heart, One Beat, One Team,” seeks to broaden the youths’ international outlook, and foster mutual understanding and friendship in Southeast Asia and Japan.
The SSEAYP began in January 1974 after joint statements were issued by Japan and the Asean countries Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined them in 1985 and Vietnam in 1996. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
