TEAM Iloilo City was aiming for as many medals as possible as it begins its campaign in the Visayas leg of the 2017 Batang Pinoy in Dumaguete City.
Student athletes from Iloilo City were expected to give their all after the hard and long preparation for the competitions, according to Rommel Castro, head of city government’s Sports Development Division.
“Our athletes will try to take as many medals as possible,” Castro told Panay News. “We are optimistic that they will give their best shot as only a few Ilonggos are given the chance to represent their city.”
Batang Pinoy Visayas leg was ongoing until Nov. 16.
Team Iloilo City comprised 86 athletes in taekwondo, karatedo, pencak silat, arnis, and chess.
Aside from Castro, also part of the delegation was Moises Salomon Jr. of the Iloilo City Sports and Youth Development Office.
“Our athletes are ready to compete here in Dumaguete City and bring glory to Iloilo City,” Salomon said. “They are ready to keep in step with tougher players from other parts of Visayas.”
Other events scheduled for the weeklong leg were athletics, badminton, boxing, basketball, swimming, and tennis.
Batang Pinoy is a national sports program for children 17 years old and below.
The grassroots-based undertaking aims to scout potential athletes for national and international competitions, primarily the quadrennial Youth Olympic Games.
The Philippine Sports Commission organized the event to develop and promote sports, and foster self-discipline, teamwork and excellence for the development of a healthy citizenry./PN
