ILOILO City – The ambient air quality in this city remains good, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 6.
As observed by the agency’s La Paz plaza air monitoring station on Oct. 20, the air quality improved from that examined in September.
Good air quality was also monitored by the agencies’ station at the University of San Agustin area.
In measuring air quality, DENR-EMB uses a special equipment that assesses particulate matter – the sum of all solid and liquid particles suspended in air, many of which are hazardous.
Air monitoring is based on DENR’s Administrative Order 2000-81 and Section 4 of the DENR Memorandum Circular No. 13 series of 2005.
‘CLEAN AIR CITY’
Mayor Jose Espinosa III expressed confidence that Iloilo City would soon be recognized as a “clean air city.”
The Coalition of Clean Air Advocates of the Philippines (CCAAP) tagged Iloilo as the next city to win the title in an article published by Business World newspaper on Nov. 8.
“Iloilo has always been prepared for competitions like this. We have a lot of useful environmental programs,” said Espinosa.
Iloilo is one of a few cities with a Clean Air Plan and Greenhouse Reduction Plan, according to City Environment and Natural Resources Officer Engr. Noel Hechanova.
When he was a city councilor in 2013, Espinosa authored the Perimeter Boundary Ordinance 2013 which regulated the entry of public utility jeepneys, cargo vans and jeepneys, and buses originating from the province of Iloilo and other neighboring provinces.
The boundary ordinance helped in the aversion of more than 10,000 liters of diesel fuel per day and substantial reduction of nitrogen oxide, sulfur oxide, and particulate matter, said Espinosa.
The mayor was also involved in the campaign for fuel retrofitting from gasoline to liquefied petroleum gas, and one of those who reviewed the Bio-Fuels Act of 2006 or an act directing the use of biofuels.
“We have promoted energy efficiency or lamp retrofitting in favor of conserving energy like LED and we have an ongoing project promoting solar energy,” said Hechanova.
He added they implement programs in raising awareness for the reduction of outdoor and indoor pollution. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
