Iloilo’s flood control needs dredging, slope protection

ILOILO City – If Mayor Jerry Treñas were to assess, the Iloilo flood control project in Barangay Buhang, Jaro district needs dredging.

Kinanglan gid limpyuhan. Nagsugod ang aton floodway sang 2010 and subong pa lang masugod ang paglimpyo,” Treñas said.

Last week, the mayor inspected the water level of the floodway following torrential rains brought by typhoon “Quinta.”

He said the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) regularly conducts dredging not until recently when some of the filling materials were used for the city’s coronavirus laboratory in Barangay San Pedro, Molo district.

Aside from dredging, the city mayor said the DPWH will also start to put concrete slope protection of the floodway.

“May mga portion gid man nga nagtiphag sa slopes niya kag waay na semento. Ang DPWH masugod na sila slope protection nga sementado. Hopefully, amat-amat maobra man ina,” the city mayor noted.

While the slope protection jobs have not yet started, Treñas said DPWH will do a lot of dredging of the floodway.

“Kada baha naganabaw nga naganabaw ang aton floodway. It needs a lot of work and hopefully DPWH will do it. Ang syudad nabudlayan sini kon amo na na kadaku nga maintenance job,” Treñas added.

To note, last Monday, a total of 37 families in Jaro District were evacuated due to the ill-effects of Typhoon “Quinta.” Several barangays were flooded.

Affected families moved to their barangay gymnasiums, multipurpose halls, barangay chapels or at relatives’ houses./PN
