Iloilo’s Ganzon rules Ironman Asian Elite tilt

MANILA – Alexandra Ganzon stamped class in the Regent Aguila Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championships on Sunday in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu province.

The native of Iloilo City struggled in her first Ironman stint last year but this year ruled the women’s Asian Elite category – finishing in five hours, four minutes and 52 seconds.

“I am blessed to win the gold medal and at the same time set my personal best. I am also thankful to the persons who believed in me,” Ganzon told Panay News.

“I am also thankful to my coaches for pushing me during my training in Iloilo City,” the Ilongga triathlete added. “All our hard work paid off.”

Just like Ganzon, Cebuano Banjo Norte also got the spotlight in the triathlon event as he ruled the men’s Asian Elite category, clocking 4:24:34.

Mexican Mauricio Mendez, meanwhile, dished out another performance to remember as he outran the stellar opposition heading home to annex the coveted AsPac men’s title.

Mendez clocked in 3:46.45 to outclass Bermuda’s Tyler Butterfield (3:47.39), Braden Currie (3:48.12) and multi-titled Australians Tim Reed (3:52.51) and Craig Alexander (3:54.09) in the grueling 1.9k-swim, 90k-bike, 21k-run event.

Czech Radka Kahlefeldt ruled the distaff side with 4:12.13 – eight minutes clear of Swiss Caroline Steffen, who had 4:21.50, and 2017 winner Mel Hauschildt, who settled for bronze with 4:22.50./PN
