MANILA – Jovelyn Gonzaga and Maica Morada of Cignal HD Spikers-A moved closer to the 2017 Belo-Philippine Superliga Beach Volleyball quarterfinals after notching its first win on Thursday night at the SM By the Bay in SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City.
The Guimaras-native Gonzaga and Morada bucked a shaky start to score a 21-10, 15-21, 15-8 win over the Generika-Ayala Life Savers-B of Rosalie Pepito and Kathleen Arado.
Gonzaga admitted she and her teammate Morada had a hard time matching up with Pepito and Arado, which also lost to the Perpetual Help’s Marijo Medalla and Bianca Tripoli, 21-19, 21-16, in their second match.
“Everybody improved,” said Gonzaga, who won the championship last year with Ilongga Nerissa Bautista for the Philippine Army. “I will try my best to be play with extreme caution because everybody is out to win the title.”
Also having a good start in the tournament is the pair of Negrense Bernadeth Pons and Cherry Rondina of Petron Sprint 4T, which swept the F2 Logistics-A of Cyd Demecillo and Ilongga Fritz Gallenero.
“Medyo famillar na po kami sa isa’t isa (ni Pons) kasi for the past three years palagi kaming magkakalaban sa UAAP,” said Rondina. “At least alam na namin kung paano mananalo.”
Also notching their first win are the pair of Bacolodnon Patty Orendain and Ilongga Fiola Ceballos of Generika-Ayala Life Savers-A, which finished off Cignal HD Spikers-B’s Mylene Paat and Janine Marciano, 21-18, 21-17.
Other winners are Petron XCS’ Frances Molina and Shiela Pineda, who defeated Foton’s Kathleen Barrinuevo and Cherilyn Sindayen, 21-11, 19-21, 15-10, Cocolife’s Wensh Tiu and Abie Nuval, which edged Demecillo and Gallenero, 15-21, 21-18, 17-15./PN
