MANILA – Far Eastern University Tamaraws leaned on its depth and composure to thwart Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights, 26-24, 22-25, 25-19, 29-27, in the V-League Men’s Collegiate Challenge at the Paco Arena in Manila.
Ilonggo Dryx Saavedra made his presence felt with 14 points, while team captain Jelord Talisayan chipped in 15 markers as the Tamaraws secured the first playoff berth with its 5-1 win-loss slate.
Saavedra’s offensive firepower was on full display, converting 11 of his 28 spike attempts. Talisayan, meanwhile, showcased his defensive tenacity, recording a game-high three blocks.
“Thankful kami kasi nakita namin kung hanggang saan ‘yung kapasidad ng players natin sa dikdikan na game,” said Tamaraws head coach Eddieson Orcullo said after the game.
“Ang instruction lang, lumaro ka kung ano lang ‘yung ineensayo mo every day. Dapat pagdating sa game, ‘yun ‘yung lumabas,” he added.
Despite trailing by as many as six points in the fourth set (11-17), the Tams unleashed a 9-3 run to tie the match at 20. They maintained their momentum and outlasted the Knights in an intense extended frame.
John Bautista delivered 17 points, including 13 attacks, two blocks and two aces, while Andrew Abeto and Vince Himzon contributed with 12 and 11 points, respectively, as the Knights dropped to 2-4.
Meanwhile, University of the East Lady Warriors strengthen their playoff bid in the V-League Women’s Collegiate Challenge with a 25-9, 25-23, 22-25, 25-16 victory over Colegio de San Juan de Letran Lady Knights.
Khy Cepada continued her fine play for the Lady Warriors with 19 points, including 15 attacks and four aces, along with 12 excellent receptions as they improved to a 3-2 win-loss slate.
Setter Kizzie Madriaga orchestrated the offense with 18 excellent sets and added two points for the Lady Warriors, which were playing in the tournament without star hitter Casiey Dongallo./PN
