ILOILO City – Decked-out in all their Lady Eagles and Lady Spikers team pride apparel, Ilonggo volley fans flocked to the Iloilo Sports Complex on Saturday to witness a few of their favorite players engage in some old-school collegiate rivalry as the Ateneo Lady Eagles-led Team Blue crushed the De La Salle University Lady Spikers-backed Green team, 23-25, 26-24, 16-14.
Led by Michelle Gumabao, the DLSU-enforced Team Green boasted the all-star lineup of Aby Maraño, Chie Saet, Melissa Gohing, Janine Marciano and Jeushl Wensh Tiu with former National University Lady Bulldogs star Myla Pablo as their backup.
Meanwhile, waving the blue flag for Ateneo were Amy Ahomiro, Mae Tajima, Charo Soriano, Denden Lazaro, Bea Tan, Jem Ferrer, and Ella de Jesus, along with many-time V-League MVP Jovelyn Gonzaga.
The first set saw tight competition as the teams exchanged points and traded leads every other turn until the Atenistas broke through with a narrow 13-11 advantage behind Ahomiro.
However, the Green Team, as Gumabaom, Gohing and Maraño surged ahead, turned the tables to claim the first set with a come-from-behind rally.
Though a driving force at the start of the game, DLSU star Gohing had to leave prematurely after the first set due to scheduling reasons.
“I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to finish the game because I have to catch my 8:20 p.m. flight. I will see you again mga kapwa kong Ilonggo!” tweeted the Bacolod City-born volley belle. The Green team was without a reserve for the rest of the match.
Refusing to hand over the game, Team Blue quickly gained the upper-hand with consecutive hits from Lazaro and Gonzaga, 18-11. The La Salle-backed squad got to within set point, but Ateneo proved faster to claim the frame.
The final set provided some nail-biting entertainment as the Blue team repeatedly answered back rallies by the Green squad. The towering Tajima then dealt two booming hits against La Salle at 9-7. The Green Team remained steadfast to knot the game at 14-all.
However, an ace by Gonzaga and an unfortunate miscue by Maraño handed the victory to the Ateneo-led Blue team.
Aside from the court clash, the star spikers also conducted a volleyball clinic on Saturday morning for 50 elementary and 50 secondary students at the Ateneo de Iloilo Gym, as part of the city’s grassroots sports program.
The event was also a homecoming of sorts for Ilonggas Maraño (who traces her roots from Passi City) and Gonzaga (a proud product of Central Philippine University)./PN
