BACOLOD City – The city council is requesting the Office of the Building Official to inspect all business processing outsource (BPO) companies in the city to ensure that they are complying with the safety building standards.
Councilor Renecito Novero authored the resolution in response to the fire incident in a Davao City mall that claimed that lives of 38 call center agents on Dec. 23.
The agents were working in a BPO firm located inside the mall.
According to Novero, the survivors of the blaze had a hard time escaping the building because the fire exits were blocked.
The sprinkler system did not also work, added Novero.
He said to avoid a similar incident, it is necessary to inspect all BPO facilities in the city.
Earlier, Bacolod-Negros Federation for Information and Communications Technology executive director Jocelle Batapa-Sigue said 80 percent of the BPO companies operating in Bacolod are accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA).
PEZA initiates regular annual and periodic inspections to maintain facility standards in BPO firms.
Regular fire drills and emergency and evacuation measures are also conducted in the firms, she said.
The city hosts large-scale call center firms like Convergys, Teleperformance, Teletech, and PanAsiatic Solutions. (With a report from PNA/PN)
