MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte said that he was able to confirm the controversial “pastillas” scheme within the Bureau of Immigrations, where Chinese nationals allegedly pay thousands of pesos in exchange for being escorted through the immigration process.

President Duterte said in an interview with GMA 7’s 24 Oras on Saturday evening the scheme was confirmed through intelligence information.

“I had it verified. There’s truth kaya ako sabi ko, there’s no other way to do it except to suspend them and investigate them,” Duterte said.

He was referring to his order to relieve the Bureau of Immigration officials and employees of their duties after being linked to the “pastillas” scheme.

Sen. Risa Hontiveros last week revealed that some erring BI personnel are receiving P10,000 as “grease money” from Chinese nationals who want to get special treatment upon their arrival in the Philippines.

The scheme was called “pastillas” because the money was allegedly concealed in a rolled bond paper that is akin to the wrapper for the milk candy.

Hontiveros recommended a major revamp at the Immigration as her women, children, family relations, and gender equality committee drafts a report on its ongoing probe.
