ILOILO City – The city government may allot a day for the Indigenous People (IP) as one of the events in future Dinagyang festivals to recognize the Atis – believed to be the first settlers of Panay Island.
The allocation of an IP Day was among the recommendations during the post-Dinagyang assessment facilitated by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog together with the local media.
“Dinagyang is all about them as well, aside from giving honor to Señor Sto. Niño. It is good to have a day exclusive for the IPs,” he said.
The IP Day will allow the Atis to showcase their culture and practices before the public.
The Atis were believed to be the first group that embraced Catholicism.
The Dinagyang Festival’s ati-ati tribe competition showcases various interpretations of how this group of IP that used to venerate objects surrounding them turned their faith to the Sto. Niño (Holy Child Jesus).
The festival started in 1968, a year after a replica of the Sto. Niño was brought from Cebu to the San Jose Parish.
The image, accompanied by devotees from Cebu, was enthusiastically received by the Ilonggos who danced on the streets of the city to the tune of rumbling drums./PN
