ILOILO City – Transferring the flyover on the corner of Jalandoni and General Luna streets, City Proper to the circumferential road in Barangay Buhang, Jaro district is not practical and not feasible.
This emerged during the hearing conducted by the Sangguniang Panlungsod’s committee on infrastructure chaired by Councilor Ely Estante.
For one, the transfer would be costly, according to Estante, citing the opinion of the Department of Public Works and Highways in Region 6.
The two-lane flyover is also not suitable for the four-lane circumferential road, he added.
On top of these, only 40 percent – or even less – of the flyover can be “salvaged” for the transfer once it is dismantled, Estante said.
Public transport groups were also consulted about the proposed transfer and they were of the opinion that the flyover was serving its purpose of easing traffic congestion in the area, the councilor also said.
Estante said he will submit his committee’s report to the SP next week.
Last month, Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog asked Estante’s committee to study the effectiveness of the flyover in easing traffic congestion.
In his personal observation, the P386-million flyover had become useless.
The mayor said the flyover may be moved to the circumferential road in Barangay Buhang “agud makasabat sa problema sang trapiko sa lugar.”
Mabilog said the area does not have traffic lights, too, that regulate the flow of vehicles.
The flyover there could also curb vehicular accidents, he added.
The Jalandoni flyover was opened to traffic on July 9, 2010. It was built under the French-assisted Mega Bridges for Urban and Rural Development Project of the then Arroyo administration.
The flyover was 315 lineal meters long, including its approaches./PN
