ILOILO City – Seventeen municipal police chiefs in Iloilo province face investigation. Their police units have not made any drug-related arrests since March 1 this year.
The police chiefs were from the towns of Alimodian, Anilao, Badiangan, Barotac Viejo, Batad, Bingawan, Dingle, Dumangas, Guimbal, Igbaras, Janiuay, Lemery, Leon, Miag-ao, San Dionisio, San Rafael, and Tubungan.
“They will be made to explain why there was not even one drug-related arrest in their respective turfs since the relaunching of Oplan Double Barrel,” said Senior Superintendent Harold Tuzon, director of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office.
An oversight committee of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) recently reviewed the performance of 42 municipal police stations in Iloilo in relation to the campaign against illegal drugs since the relaunching of the police’s antidrug campaign.
From what he had gathered, Tuzon said, there were no more identified drug personalities in the 17 towns – either these persons were already arrested or they moved to other areas.
Another possible explanation, he said, was that previously identified drug-affected barangays in these towns were already cleared.
According to Senior Superintendent Christopher Tambungan, chairperson of PRO-6’s oversight committee for illegal drugs, police chiefs with unconvincing or unsatisfactory explanations for their zero accomplishments may be administratively charged for being negligent or may be relieved from their posts.
“Hindi ako naniniwala na wala na talagang drug personalities sa area nila. May mga bagong players d’yan at ewan ko kung bakit hindi nila mahuli,” said Tambungan.
Tambungan specified the town of Dumangas, a coastal town with a seaport long identified as a transshipment point of illegal drugs.
“We received reports that the port of Dumangas is among the passage ways of illegal drugs from Bacolod City, so I don’t believe na wala talaga silang mahuli,” said Tambungan.
Every police station is required to conduct at least two antidrug operations in a month./PN
