BACOLOD City – Members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) and Mayor Evelio Leonardia have initiated ceremonies conferring businessman and singer-composer Jose Mari Chan as the city’s adopted son and honorary mayor.

The conferment happened on Friday at the SP session hall (adopted son conferment) and the City Mayor’s Office (honorary mayor conferment) inside the Bacolod City Government Center.

Chan’s conferment was part of the ongoing 13th Bacolaodiat Festival – a local celebration to welcome the Chinese New Year.

Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, Rep. Greg Gasataya, Cebu City mayor Tomas Osmeña, Bacolaodiat, Inc. head Jennifer Ong, and Chan’s wife Mary Ann were also present during the conferment.

Leonardia thanked the 72-year-old Chan for accepting to be an adopted son and honorary mayor of the city.

During the conferment, Chan said Bacolod City is his second home.

According to Leonardia, Chan has contributed to the economic well-being of Bacolod and the rest of Negros Occidental through his involvement in the sugar industry.

Chan currently sits as the chairman and chief executive officer of the Binalbagan-Isabela Sugar Company, Inc. and the A. Chan Sugar Corp.

Chan offered the titles given to him to his late Chinese immigrant father.

“I offer this honor to my father who came to this country as a penniless immigrant. [He] sacrificed and became successful and now he’s part of the heritage of Negros having helped the sugar industry.”

He added, “All that I am and all that I have, I owe it to my father. If he were alive, he would be proud.”

The SP has earlier issued Resolution No. 81 series of 2018 declaring Chan as Bacolod’s adopted son while Leonardia issued Executive Order No. 6 making Chan the city’s honorary mayor.

Chan received copies of the resolution and the executive order and a symbolic key during the conferment. (With a report from the Philippine News Agency/PN)
