BACOLOD City – The city of Kabankalan in Negros Occidental recorded its first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) death.
The patient was a 34-year-old woman and resident of the city’s Barangay 6, according to Mayor Pedro Zayco.
She started coughing and had difficulty breathing on Oct. 12.
The next day, the patient went to a private hospital for consultation and was referred for X-ray in a government hospital before being allowed to return home.
On the morning of Oct. 14, the patient was rushed again to the hospital for admission. Her condition, however, deteriorated and she passed away later in the evening.
Prior to her passing, the patient underwent reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction test.
The result was released on Oct. 16.
Zayco said the patient had no pre-existing health conditions and travel history outside of the city.
She was immediately buried, the mayor added.
“Contact tracing is currently being conducted,” Zayco said.
As of Oct. 17, Kabankalan City had a total of 292 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 162 of which were active while 129 have recovered.
The city’s Barangay 9 topped the most number of active cases with 53, followed by Barangay 4 with 50, and Barangay 3 with 26.
The city also has 109 active persons under monitoring./PN
