KALIBO, Aklan – Municipal councilors strongly oppose the expanded Small Time Lottery (STL).

“Revenue generated from STL operation in Aklan would not compensate for the lost morals, values and principles held sacred by Kalibonhons,” the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) said in a resolution.

Yetbo Gaming Philippines Corp., an accredited agent corporation of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, started operating STL in Aklan last week.

With office on N. Roldan Street, Barangay Poblacion, Yetbo has more than 500 kubradors and kabos authorized to collect bets from all over the province.

Gambling “[downplays] the value of hard work and [exploits] the vulnerabilities of poor communities for the selfish and personal agenda of STL operators,” read part of the resolution.

“STL operation would serve as a strong [precedent for] other forms of illegal gambling, such as jueteng, to thrive in Aklan,” stated the resolution sponsored by SB members Mark Quimpo and Mark Ace Bautista.

SB member Wendell Tayco reiterated his position against the STL.

“[The] STL operator failed to secure business permits from the local government of Kalibo,” said Tayco. “It is a great disrespect to the government officials and the people of Aklan who have constantly voiced their vehement opposition to any form of gambling.”

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan, the Diocese of Kalibo and several business groups are also against the STL. Gambling, whether legal or illegal, will erode moral values, they maintained. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
