ILOILO City – A barangay captain who was hospitalized for showing symptoms similar to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) died.
Mayor Jerry Treñas confirmed the passing away of Myrna Espinosa of Barangay Infante, Molo district at the break of dawn yesterday.
Espinosa’s COVID-19 test result was yet to be released yesterday, thus she remained a suspected or probable.
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, and dry cough.
Some patients may have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea. These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. Some people become infected but don’t develop any symptoms and don’t feel unwell.
“I am very sad to announce that one of our hardworking barangay captains taking care of her barangay and constituents during this most difficult time left us and joined our Creator,” according to Treñas.
Espinosa, he said, “spent most of her life taking care of her constituents.”
“Let us say a prayer for her every time we remember all the local chief executives in all the barangays working for their constituents,” Treñas posted on Facebook.
The city mayor announced last week that all the barangay captains will be swabbed for COVID-19 testing following the positive test result of Barangay Jonathan Altura of Barangay South Fundidor, Molo.
The city has a total of 180 barangay captains.
People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus. The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales.
These droplets also land on objects and surfaces around the person. Other people then catch COVID-19 by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth./PN
