ILOILO – Policemen raided the house of the barangay captain of Kinalkalan, Balasan, Iloilo. They were tipped off that Andres Bedro, 40, was keeping an unlicensed gun.

Operatives of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office’s (IPPO) Special Operations Group, however, left Bedro’s house empty-handed.

They found Bedro’s .45 pistol but the barangay captain had a gun license and even a permit to carry his firearm outside of his residence that would expire on Sept. 5, 2020 yet.

The raid was effected around 6 a.m. on Nov. 8.

According to IPPO spokesperson Senior Inspector Rolando Araño, they received information that Bedro had an unlicensed gun.

“This operation was part of the IPPO’s campaign against loose firearms. Our focus now is on criminal gangs, unlicensed guns and robbers in the 5th District of Iloilo,” said Araño.

The 5th District is made up of the municipalities of Ajuy, Balasan, Barotac Viejo, Batad, Carles, Concepcion, Estancia, Lemery, San Dionisio, San Rafael, and Sara.

According to Chief Superintendent Cesar Hawthorne Binag, regional police director, they received text messages about not only the illegal drug problem in the district but also about criminal gangs operating there.

“We encourage community partnership in cleansing the 5th District,” said Binag.

He assured residents of the district that “in the performance of our official function, the rule of law and respect for human rights (will be observed).”/PN
