MANILA — Alexandra Eala’s 2026 Miami Open campaign came to an abrupt end after the Filipina standout was overpowered by Czech star Karolína Muchová, 6-0, 6-2, in a dominant Round of 16 performance on Monday night (Philippine time) in Miami, Florida.
Muchová dictated the pace from the outset, imposing her rhythm and overwhelming Eala with precise serving and aggressive returns, never allowing the young Filipina to find her footing throughout the match.
The statistics underscored the one-sided affair. Muchová landed 69 percent of her first serves and won 80 percent of those points, while Eala struggled, managing just 36 percent on her first serve after putting in 52 percent.
The Czech also controlled second-serve exchanges, winning 80 percent of those points compared to Eala’s 56 percent, further highlighting the disparity in execution and consistency.
On the return game, Muchová was equally ruthless, collecting 24 return points—triple Eala’s eight—and converting all five of her break-point opportunities. Eala, on the other hand, failed to create a single break chance.
Muchová’s dominance translated into a commanding 52-26 edge in total points, as she won 12 of the 14 games played, including a decisive stretch of 10 consecutive games that effectively sealed the outcome early.
Eala briefly showed resistance in the second set, managing to win two games and halt the run, but was unable to sustain momentum against Muchová’s steady baseline play.
Neither player recorded an ace, but Eala’s two double faults, compared to Muchová’s one, compounded the pressure on her service games.
“I feel pretty good. I mean, you know, you get nervous here and there when it’s going, I don’t want to say easy, but when the score is in your favor, it’s like you have to be cautious,” Muchová said.
“I’d say it’s kind of everything, you know, like good preparation, good team around me, good people, playing, keeping healthy, as you mentioned, good practices. It’s kind of little pieces of everything, and then when it clicks, I’m happy it clicked,” she added.
The result highlighted the gap in experience and ranking, with Muchová’s all-around efficiency proving too much for Eala, whose promising Miami run nonetheless ended against a higher-caliber opponent./PN
