MANILA – Nico Salva was set to reunite with college coach Norman Black after Kia Picanto traded him to Meralco Bolts yesterday in exchange for a future second round draft rights.
The trade was still part of Picanto’s offseason buildup for its desired “unconventional” style of play after recently releasing veteran players Jason Ballesteros and Juan Nico Elorde to free agency.
Salva working again with Black is seen as an advantage – their partnership in Ateneo de Manila University produced five championships in the UAAP men’s basketball.
The former Blue Eagle could also fill the gap that may be left behind by Chris Newsome, who was reported to be packaged with Baser Amer in a trade with GlobalPort Batang Pier for Terrence Romeo.
Salva, 27, was set to play for his fifth team in the league. He previously suited up for Batang Pier, Barako Bull Energy Cola, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings.
Meanwhile, TNT KaTropa was also set to acquire rookie forward Sidney Onwubere from Phoenix Fuel Masters in exchange for fellow rookie Jon-jon Gabriel and Bacolodnon big man Justin Chua.
The Filipino-Nigerian was expected to play a huge role for KaTropa with his length and improved outside shooting while Gabriel was also seen to be a key part of the defense-oriented system of Fuel Masters under head coach Louie Alas.
To make room for Gabriel and Chua, Fuel Masters traded bruiser Michael Miranda to NLEX Road Warriors in exchange for a future second round pick./PN
