BACOLOD Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts is optimistic of its chances as it represents Bacolod City in the Visayas leg of the Batang Pinoy from Nov. 10 to 16 in Dumaguete City.
Jose Montalbo, Tay Tung’s vice chairman for sports, knows his team will fare well in the tournament after gaining experiences from their participation to the Iloilo U-14 and Rebisco Girls V-League recently.
“We know that the competition in Batang Pinoy will be tough, with other cities fielding their best players, but I am confident our players can keep in step with the opponents,” Montalbo told Panay News.
“As part of our preparation for Batang Pinoy, we have joined various tournaments, including the Iloilo U-14 recently, where our players were able to gain experience and at the same time build their chemistry,” he added.
Thunderbolts comprises Alyssa Bertolano, Shane Carmona, Hannah Quanico, Kiesha Bedonia, Rhean Almendralejo, Gwen Banas, Charlene Tayapad, Katherine Cortez, Auria Alvero, Kathleen Tan, Annikha Cabasac, and Nicholie Galvan.
Ian Macariola was the head coach and Biboy Calamba the assistant coach.
A national competition for 17-year-olds and younger, Batang Pinoy seeks to foster self-discipline, teamwork and development of healthy citizens.
Aside from girls volleyball, other marquee sporting events in the weeklong tournament were athletics, badminton, boxing, basketball, swimming, tennis, and taekwondo./PN
