MANILA – Fresh from bagging his fourth gold medal in the Southeast Asian Games men’s basketball, Kiefer Ravena said he was not closing doors to a possible chase for a fifth gold in the next edition of the biennial event.
“If given an opportunity, I would like to represent the country again in the SEA Games” in 2019, which will be held in the Philippines, the Ilonggo player said.
Ravena became the winningest Filipino basketball player in the SEA Games after Gilas Pilipinas tightened its grip on the hoops throne by decidedly beating Indonesia in the finals Saturday night 94-55.
The former Ateneo Blue Eagles star also played for the Philippines when the country bagged the SEA Games gold in 2011, 2013 and 2015. His record surpassed that of the retired Rommel Adducul.
But Joseph Uichico, the national men’s basketball team head coach, doubted Ravena’s 2019 SEA Games chances.
“I don’t think so,” he said of possibly tapping Ravena. “By that time, he could already be in the PBA. It is time for a transition to other younger players.”
Ravena, a two-time UAAP Most Valuable Player, was still contemplating joining the 2017 PBA Rookie Draft.
“Matagal ko na ding dream to have the record of the most (gold) medals (in the SEA Games),” Ravena said. “Blessing siya sa akin dahil hindi lahat ng players nakakaabot ng apat na SEA Games.”
“I am fortunate na maaga akong nag-start (maglaro for SEA Games) at nagkaroon ako ng chance na ganito,” he added./PN
