MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings import Justin Brownlee hopes to lead his squad to its first championship in eight years in Game 6 of the 2016 Oppo PBA Governor’s Cup finals against the Meralco Bolts on Wednesday.
Brownlee, second placer in the Best Import of the Conference race, admits this will be his first time to lead a team in a championship series but said he’s open to the challenge.
“I’ve never been in a finals and close out a finals series, so it’s going to be a difficult task, but I’m looking forward to it,” said Brownlee, who replaced the Kings’ original import Paul Harris, who suffered a season-ending injury.
“We just got to try hard on Wednesday because whatever we got to do, it’s going to be hard. Meralco’s a great team and for sure they will do everything to stay alive,” added Brownlee.
Brownlee recovered from a subpar 10-point output in Game 4 with a double-double 29 points and 10 rebounds performance in Kings’ 92-81 victory over the Bolts in Game 5 on Sunday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Brownlee immediately made his presence felt as he scored 14 of his 20 first half points on the opening period before involving his teammates with assists in the next three quarters.
“I think I came out pretty aggressive from the start of the game,” Brownlee said. “I just tried to be aggressive and still have a balance with getting my teammates involved. I think it’s a pretty good job for me.”
“We’ve always felt confident, but we know that we’re not done yet, we’re not satisfied,” he added. “Three-two is just being one game ahead, it’s not winning the series, so we’re just trying to stay confident and look forward to next game.”/PN
