MANILA – The Ceres-La Salle Football Club scored a stunning 5-0 victory over rival Global Football Club during the 2016 United Football League on Sunday night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Adrian Gallardo-Valdez fired two goals, while Jeffrey Christiaens, Olapido Okunaiya and Bienvenido Maranon added one each for the Bacolod City-based Ceres-La Salle, which is at second place with 41 points on a 13-3-2 win-loss-draw slate.
Both teams had a shaky start with both sides misfiring from close range. Ceres-La Salle finally scored the match’s first goal as Gallardo-Valdez smashed one from close range via a corner kick.
Just before the halftime break, the defending champion Ceres-La Salle doubled up the score as Christiaens eluded the defense of Global’s keeper for a conversion from the wing.
Ceres-La Salle continued to widen the lead at the onset of the second half as Okuniaya drained one from close range. Two more conversions from Maranon and Gallardo-Valdes ended the match.
Despite the defeat, the reigning UFL Cup titlist Global remains on top of the standings with 47 points on a 15-2-2 win-loss-draw slate and will likely clinch the crown at the close of the double-round eliminations on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Iloilo City-based Stallion Gilligan’s Football Club got back on the winning column with a 3-1 victory over the Green Archers United Globe Football Club. Stallion Gilligan’s is currently at sixth place while Green Archers United Globe is a slot behind.
The Stallions jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by Ilonggo Ruben Doctora and Park Bo Bae. The Green Archers United Globe got one back in the second half behind Ronnie Aguinsada but the Stallions sealed the win behind a Fitch Arboleda hit./PN
