MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings survived a gritty stand by Star Hotshots to score a 105-101 overtime victory in the 2017 Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
With the scores tied at 101-all, import Justin Brownlee and Joe Devance came up with split free throws to push Kings ahead 103-101 with under a minute left in overtime on Sunday night.
Star had a chance to tie the count but Paul Lee and Allein Maliksi misfired. Then Ginebra’s Japeth Aguilar drained a game-sealing putback for Kings.
Brownlee top-scored with conference-best 33 points for Ginebra, helping the Governors’ Cup defending champion to move to solo first place with a 6-1 win-loss record.
Devance and Gregory Slaughter added 17 apiece while LA Tenorio and Aguilar chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively.
“It’s always special facing (Star),” said Ginebra head coach Tim Cone. “This was our first close game this conference. We hung around, hung around and, basically, I felt we stole it in the end.”
Star was leading for most of the opening half before Ginebra turned things around in the third frame to force a tight exchange in the fourth period that led to an overtime following three clutch free throws by Hotshots import Malcolm Hill.
In the overtime period, Kings and Hotshots exchanged three baskets each to remain tied at 101-all before the former scored four straight points while preventing the latter from having a decent shot to tally its sixth straight triumph this conference.
Hill finished with 28 points while Lee added 22 markers for Star, which suffered its second straight defeat to slide to 4-2./PN
