MANILA – Just 11 days after a controversial Twitter post on Ateneo high school star Kai Sotto, Kobe Paras shared his thoughts on another issue in Philippine collegiate basketball, particularly in choosing the MVPs in UAAP and NCAA.
Paras retweeted on Monday the official announcement of Ben Mbala as UAAP Season 80 MVP and congratulated the La Salle star, but he added that the league and NCAA should have separate winners for the top individual player among locals and foreigners.
While he believed Mbala deserved winning a second straight MVP award, the 20-year-old son of PBA rookie MVP Benjie Paras noted that not having a separate award for locals and foreigners puts homegrown players at a disadvantage.
“Ben deserves that MVP but there should be an MVP for local players and imports in the NCAA & UAAP … Really unfair for the locals,” wrote Paras, who played for La Salle Greenhills before moving to the United States to pursue a basketball career.
His tweet sparked a debate, with Mbala’s teammate Ricci Rivero coming to the defense of the Season 80 MVP. Paras was quick to fire a response, clarifying that he had no intention of hurting anyone with his tweet.
The 6-foot-6 Paras also apologized for his tweet before insisting that he considered Mbala deserving of the MVP award.
Mbala was the clear MVP winner in Season 80 with 96.58 statistical points, with Ateneo star Thirdy Ravena a far second with 66.5 SPs.
On Nov. 17, Paras tweeted that Ateneo high school big man Kai Sotto should pursue a basketball career in the United States. (SPIN.ph)
