MANILA – De La Salle University Green Archers made sure Ateneo Blue Eagles won’t go straight to the finals of the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball. It defeated its rival 79-76 last night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Down by as much as 12 points early in the final frame on a trey by Blue Eagles’ Raffy Verano, Green Archers turned to Benoit Mbala, Ricci Rivero and Abu Tratter to come to within 65-68.

Blue Eagles managed to pull away 76-69 on conversions from Isaac Go and Thirdy Ravena but La Salle scored 6 from Tratter, Mbala and Rivero to trim the deficit 75-76.

Kib Montalbo then drained the go-ahead basket with 40 seconds left for a 77-76 Green Archers lead. After misses from Blue Eagles, Rivero scored for La Salle for their 3-point lead.

Mbala finished with 28 points and 19 rebounds while Rivero added 21 markers – 12 in the final quarter – for Green Archers, which improved to 12-2.

Failing to achieve a 14-0 record, Ateneo will settle for a Final Four match with Far Eastern University Tamaraws as Green Archers takes on No. 3 Adamson University Falcons.

In the first game, University of Santo Tomas Tigers avoided a win-less season after escaping University of the East Red Warriors 88-85.

Regie Boy Basibas led the way with 21 points while Steve Akomo added 18 points and 20 rebounds for Tigers./PN
