MANILA – Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws opened its campaign in the UAAP Season 82 Women’s Volleyball with a rousing 25-9, 25-20, 25-17 sweep over the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City yesterday.
Jeanette Villareal fired 11 points built on eight attacks, two blocks and a service ace, while Ivana Agudo contributed 10 markers, including nine attacks, for the revamped Lady Tamaraws.
Angel Cayuna finished the match with 18 excellent sets to go along with eight points, including four in the latter part of third set, while Ilongga libero Ria Duremdes listed 22 excellent digs and four excellent receptions.
The Lady Tamaraws set the tone early in the match with an 8-3 edge following a hit by Villareal and Agudo. The lead extended further to 16-4 in the second technical timeout en route to an easy first set triumph.
UE managed to keep in step with FEU in the second set and were just down 16-14, but FEU leaned on hits from Czarina Carandang, Shiela Kiseo and Zen Perolino to grab a 2-0 set lead.
The pace of the match for FEU started slow in the third frame and even trailed at 9-11. However, booming hits from Cayuna and Villareal gave the Lady Tamaraws the upper hand before Cayuna closed the match with two service aces.
Mary Ann Mendrez was the lone bright spot for UE with 13 points – all coming from attacks – while Janeca Lana contributed eight markers in the losing effort.
In the men’s division, Season 81 runner-up FEU Tamaraws held off UE Red Warriors in straight sets, 25-10, 25-22, 25-23. JJ Javelona, a rookie out of FEU’s high school program, spearheaded the charge with 11 points./PN
