MANILA – Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James played briefly but helped Gilas Young Bloods score a lopsided win over Gilas Old School 92-71 in an exhibition match at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
James came up with plenty of highlights to lead the Gilas cadets-led Young Bloods to a victory over Old School, which was bannered by PBA veterans, during the Saturday night game that was part of Nike’s Strive for Greatness Tour.
Young Bloods jumped to an early 13-8 lead on 3-point conversions by Matthew Wright. The lead grew further to 26-13 following hits by Kai Sotto, Kiefer Ravena and Roger Pogoy.
Old School went on a huge run behind Jared Dillinger, Gabe Norwood and Japeth Aguilar to snatch the lead 50-48 but Young Bloods quickly regained the edge 59-52 on hits by Raymond Almazan, Almond Vosotros and Baser Amer.
With four minutes left in the game, James made his first appearance in the match and immediately scored 5 straight points, a triple and a fast-break layup to increase Young Bloods’ lead 80-58.
James then made two assists to a triple by Wright and a slam dunk by Bobby Ray Parks Jr., before completing Young Bloods’ domination with two consecutive dunks.
Other Young Bloods members were Raymar Jose and Mike Tolomia. Also part of Old School were Jeff Chan, Jayson Castro, Ranidel de Ocampo, Gary David, Paul Lee, LA Tenorio, and Jimmy Alapag.
“I’m happy to be here, spending this time with you, guys, throughout my busy schedule, but there was no way I wasn’t going to come back here to Manila this year,” James said. “And I’m here celebrating this time with you, guys.”
This was the third time James visited the Philippines. He first came in 2013 for his Witness tour after winning his first NBA title, and then in 2015, to work with young players in Nike’s Team Rise for the Rise Beyond Belief Tour./PN
