MANILA – Ateneo Lady Eagles opened its campaign in the 2017 Premier V-League Collegiate Conference with a 25-17, 25-15, 25-15 sweep of Jose Rizal University Lady Bombers at the San Juan Arena.

Bea De Leon scored 14 points, on 11 attacks, two service aces and a block, to lead Lady Eagles, which tied Arellano University Lady Chiefs on top of the standings with a 1-0 win-loss record after the Saturday night match.

Kat Tolentino added 11 while Madeleine Madayag and Juliane Samonte chipped in 10 apiece for Ateneo, which got 32 excellent sets from Deanna Wong.

Ateneo started strong in the opening set, leading 15-5 on attacks by De Leon, Madayag and Jhoanna Maraguinot. JRU threatened to come as close as 18-23 but back-to-back hits by Maraguinot ended the set.

Lady Eagles continued the momentum in Set 2 with an 8-0 blast behind Samonte and Wong. Lady Bombers cut the deficit to half but Ateneo got conversions from Samonte and De Leon to close the frame.

JRU kept the match close early in the third set until Ateneo came up with a game-sealing run courtesy of De Leon, Madayag and Tolentino to complete a straight-set win.

“It’s a good start obviously for us and I hope it continues,” said de Leon. “But every year it’s a new team. We have to start all over again. We’re a rebuilding team. We take it one step at a time.”

Shola Alvarez and Karen Montojo finished with 9 points apiece while Dolly Verzosa had 7 markers for JRU, which tied College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers with 0-1./PN
