‘Lessen vehicle exhaust’

SAN JOSE, Antique – Environment officials are encouraging activities that lessen the emission of harmful gases from vehicles.

Today June 22 the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office will launch “Carless Friday” in observance of the Environment Month.

PENRO head Andres Untal said they are promoting alternatives to the regular use of vehicles – walking, running, biking, and carpooling – to minimize exhaust that contaminates the air.

Untal invited government officials and employees and other sectors to join the fun run/walk and bike ride from the EBJ Freedom Park to Robinsons Place mall at 6:30 a.m. A short program and the opening of a bicycle clinic will be held at the mall.

Air pollution harms human health and the environment, and most outdoor pollution are caused by road transport, studies showed.

Based on 2012 World Health Organization data, an estimated 3.7 million premature deaths were attributed to air pollution.

Presidential Proclamation No. 237 signed by then President Corazon C. Aquino declared June of every year as Environment Month.

It mandates the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to lead monthlong related activities. (Vicente Villavert, PIA/PN)
