ILOILO City – Mayor Jose Espinosa III urged Ilonggos to emulate hero Andres Bonifacio whose 154th birth anniversary the nation marked yesterday.
“Yes, we can be heroes in our own simple way. We can be role models and inspirations to others,” he said during a commemorative program at Bonifacio’s monument in Barangay Tanza Bonifacio, City Proper.
Bonifacio founded the Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (KKK or simply Katipunan), an anti-colonial secret society that triggered the Philippine Revolution of 1896 against Spain.
“Andres Bonifacio was born a hero more than a century ago. As we celebrate his heroism today, let us tell ourselves that we, too, can be modern-day heroes in our own little way,” said Espinosa.
But how?
“All we have to do is live by the good values as responsible and productive members of our society,” said Espinosa.
The city mayor reminded Ilonggos that Bonifacio died for the freedom of Filipinos.
“That freedom is what we are enjoying right now. He sacrificed himself for love of country,” said Espinosa. “I am confident that for as long as we value our freedom, we will remain united as a people.”
Yesterday was a national holiday. President Rodrigo Duterte, in a message to Filipinos, said “it was Andres Bonifacio who ignited the fires of revolt that led to the foundation of our nation and brought freedom to our people.”
“As the heirs of his revolution, it is our solemn obligation to bring life to his aspirations and usher in an era of civic consciousness and nationalism,” he added.
Duterte said Filipinos today should fight corruption, criminality, and illegal drugs as well as terror and violence.
“Like Bonifacio, let us light the flames of change that will bring about real and meaningful transformation in our nation,” he said./PN
