ILOILO City – A group supportive of President Rodrigo Duterte’s push for a federal form of government pressed for the declaration of a revolutionary government.
Through a revolutionary government, it would be easy for the President realize a federal form of government, said Fortunato Pelaez, president of the Hugpong Federal Movement of the Philippines (HFMP), Iloilo chapter.
Movement supporters held a caravan and march in the City Proper yesterday timed with the country’s celebration of hero Andres Bonifacio’s 154th birth anniversary.
“In the one year and six months that the President has been in office, his dream of a federal form of government appears so difficult to achieve,” said Pelaez.
He recalled the late President Corazon Aquino declaring a revolutionary government in 1986.
“She then removed the corrupt and pro-Marcos officials from government,” said Pelaez.
Duterte could do the same once he declares a revolutionary government, he stressed.
“It would then be easy for the President to remove the corrupt and ‘yellowtards’ from the government, and even the drug lords waiting for the opportunity to resume their illegal business,” said Pelaez.
Malacañang, however, said there is no factual or legal basis to establish a revolutionary government for now.
“We appreciate the calls of the President’s supporters for revgov but I think there’s no factual or legal basis as of now,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque on Monday.
“The President has said that he will consider a revolutionary government if destabilizers will persist in their plan to have him removed from office. Now, I stress, we don’t see any such threat in the near future,” Roque said.
Duterte himself has recently floated the idea of a revolutionary government, only to dismiss it days after.
In Oct. 13, he said he would declare a revolutionary government if supposed destabilization attempts by his critics, particularly the Left, continue, and the country starts slipping into chaos.
“Ang sabi nilang revolutionary government, coup d’etat, huwag ninyong intindihin ‘yan, malayo ‘yan. Me, I build a nation. If the Armed Forces cooperates with me, if this is something that is good, then fine, we can work together,” Duterte later said./PN
