MANILA – Environmentalist senator Loren Legarda is calling on every Filipino to work towards a zero waste economy.
An efficient solid waste management should be a “way of life,” said Legarda, principal author of Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management law.
She urged local governments to lead the strict implementation of the law by using material recovery facility solutions or sanitary landfill/alternative technology, enforcing the ‘No segregation, no collection’ policy, closing or rehabilitating waste dumpsites, and committing to 10-year solid waste management plan.
Households were also encouraged to practice the 3Rs of conservation – reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Legarda also advised to get separate trash for food waste recyclables, and hazardous waste.
Reusable containers or cloth bags, not plastic bags, should be used for groceries or fresh produce, she said.
“A zero waste lifestyle may seem difficult at first especially since many are not used to it, but let us take it as a simple sacrifice that would make our surroundings cleaner, safer and healthier,” the senator from Antique said.
