MANILA – The Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media called on the Philippine National Police and the National Bureau of Investigation to investigate the recent killing of a radio announcer in Ilocos Sur.
Mario Contaoi was a former radio and anchorman of a church-run radio station dzNS in Vigan City.
Contaoi, 52, also spent the past 25 years teaching at the University of Northern Philippines.
“Isang mamamahayag na naman ang pumanaw matapos tambangan ng mga ‘di kilalang kalalakihan sa hindi matukoy na dahilan,” said Sen. Grace Poe, committee chair.
An initial investigation by the Ilocos Sur police showed that Cantaoi was found dead after a drinking spree with friends at his beach resort in Brgy. San Ramon in Magsingal town.
Unidentified men riding a motorcycle reportedly opened fire at him.
“Bigyang katarungan natin ang mga kaagapay natin sa pagpapalabas ng katotohanan sa pamamahayag,” Poe said.
New York City-based Committee to Protect Journalists, a non-governmental organization that promotes press freedom, said that 77 Filipino journalists have been killed on assignment between 1992 and 2005.
Cantaoi is the second media practitioner killed under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.
The first was Catanduanes News Now publisher Larry Que, who was murdered at his office in Virac, Catanduanes on Dec. 19, 2016./PN
