Man charged for filing fake robbery report in Sta. Barbara

ILOILO – A man claiming he was robbed at gunpoint is now facing a perjury case after Sta. Barbara police uncovered his fabricated report.

The 50-year-old herbal medicine seller known by the alias “Jim” reported to Sta. Barbara Municipal Police Station (MPS) that he was held up in the town’s Barangay Guno at around 6:30 p.m. on February 11, 2025.

He alleged that two unidentified motorcycle-riding men threatened him with a firearm and a bladed weapon before stealing his wallet, cellular phone, and P20,000 in cash.

However, after an extensive investigation, police found no evidence supporting Jim’s claim. Witness’ testimonies and gathered evidence indicated that no such incident occurred at the time and place he specified. As a result, police filed a perjury complaint against him on March 11 before the Iloilo Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.

Police Colonel Bayani M. Razalan, director of the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO), commended the Sta. Barbara MPS for their commitment to uncover the truth. He also warned against filing false reports, emphasizing that such acts could lead to serious legal consequences.

“Fabricating incidents not only wastes police resources but also carries penalties under the law. Anyone caught making false reports will be held accountable,” Razalan stated.

The IPPO further reminded the public to be honest when reporting crimes, as false claims undermine law enforcement efforts and may result in criminal charges./PN
